I did think that strapping it down by the bars would possibly cause stress or possible damage to the bars
I,m going to adopt the method employed by bricrewe. Damage to the bars is not a concern using bar straps, it,s the compression on the front forks as you ratchet the bike down then do 120 miles with the bike bouncing about on the trailer with all the fork travel used up.
This way employs lateral tension rather than pulling the bike down.

Are you not compressing the forks then using this method? I thought the idea of compressing the forks is so the bike doesn't bounce about possibly loosening the straps?

Will compress the forks slightly but nowhere near the sort of tension the bar straps apply straight down ( my Ohlins fork seals are fragile) !

It definitely doesn't compress them as much my way, I busted a set of seals taking the bike to drop off for Cartagena with handlebar straps.
