front brakes on zx10r 04/05 not happy
« on: December 04, 2012, 09:33:18 PM »

wel what can i say i took my new toy out today for a quick blat and the front brakes are fooking awful?
considering the 10 is fast and fooking awsome the brakes do have a lot to be desired ?
my gixer and my blade even in fact my old 99 r1 had better stopping power ?
was or am considering taking off my brembo of my gixer to put on it and the bars are too tight just really having a bitch really as ive waited a  few years now to own one but not 100% happy
recomendations would be great (oh yeah they are totaly stock brakes) i do have a set of cbr 1000rr calipers of my 04 blade was wondering if its worth swapping calipers ??? :icon_scratch:

I had a Brembo put on and some decent pads with Dot5 fluid and to be honest mine will stop on a penny ....... on the brakes into the hairpin it's pretty awesome ....... almost no fade all day and will lift the back wheel off the deck with a 2 finger squeeze on the stubby lever.  Not at racing pace but a reasonable fast group trackday rider. Maybe I'm lucky but never had a problem.

braided hoses and a brembo sorts them right out its not the actual brakes that the problem but the feel of them ...

the calipers do alright with a brembo :)

Apparently the problem with the original callipers was the internal drilling's which allowed air to become trapped. It is possible to get a good brake with them, but easier and better to upgrade them.

GTR 1400 callipers with standard M/Cyl worked for me, recently fitted later radial M/c, a small improvement over original, nothing to shout about, and probably only because it was new + new fluid.

I would agree with this, I spent a lot of time generally refurbing and cleaning the oem calipers on my old gen1 before very carefully bleeding and back-bleeding using a big placcy syringe(E-Bay). I also made sure I re-used the back plates which apparently help stop too much heat build up causing fade. Brakes worked well after that, but I didn't keep the bike long enough for a long term test

I'm not over keen on changing things and spending money unless it proves essential

I'm sure they are now, over time they get worse because of the problem i spoke of, its getting them back to where they would have been, when new, that's the problem, but is achievable, just not worth the hassle in my opinion.

Before you go diving into your savings try  the simple things first like cleaning out the calipers, cleaning and degreasing the discs and pads and remove any glazing from them with 400 grit wet & dry.

Just got my first 10 on Saturday, I had heard the brakes were a little dodgy at times but luckily mine has had R1 calipers fitted and it now has eye popping brakes not sure how easy a conversion that is though obviously as I never did it!
