Get him to check the small print. I had the same with my son once he passed his car test. Argued the point that there was nothing to tell him that the premium would go up once he'd passed and eventually they relented and we didn't have to pay extra. Company at the time was Quinn Direct and when we googled it there were loads of complaints about their methods. Worth arguing in my opinion.

I got a quote to add my girlfriend onto my car insurance so she could learn to drive in my car, worked out at 150 extra, once she passed her test it went up to 1100!!

Insurance is nothing more than legalised robbery these days. Brokers just seem to pluck a figure out of thin air when you get a quote.
