Rock Oil chain lube onto a hot chain, then Rock Oil chain wax a day later. Always applied to the inside of the chain (why do people lube the outside when its the inside that has contact with the sprockets), roughly every 6-8 rides.

Dry lube every time for me mate, Wurth or MucOff work well with bugger-all fling and doesn't attract dust. Think I've bought both at various times from Halfords so convenient, though probably not the cheapest source for em.

The idea of lube is to keep the x\o-ring seals between the side plates supple and not allowed to dry\perish so aim there. The main grease is captive between the pins and rollers and kept in by the sealing rings, that is where most wear occurs especially if the rings dry out and let all the grease escape. Otherwise, all you need is a fine mist on the rollers\sideplates to stop corrosion and help the sprockets get an easier life.

thats the stuff ive beed using but have beed told its a dry chain lube which is no good for chains from a local tyre dealer but it doesnt say dry lube on the tin

Sorry Jester, the point of chain lube is to prevent wear at the point where the sprocket and chain meet.  If you spray a warm chain the lube should run all over the links, so it's not important to lube the inside of the chain, I get 20,000 miles plus from my chains which is fine for me.

Thats not the only type of wear though.

Chain stretch comes from the wear of the rivet pins (which the rollers rotate round), so its important to also keep the rubber rings well protected/greased/oiled. This is the problem with just using chain wax. You really need a dual action wax/solvent based spray, so the solvent works its way into the inside of the chain, and then the wax hardens up on the rollers/seals.

I think I covered that in the last sentence.
Many chains end up with a tight point at the soft link as whoever assembled didn't take care to put enough of the supplied wax in there before slapping the seal on.
Quoting mileage as an indicator of care is pretty pointless considering the other variables of rider use, chain size, chain quality, chain adjustment, sprocket type and environmental conditions. 20k is a good service life though.
