changing zx10r for......?
« on: September 08, 2012, 10:54:17 PM »

so guys........ I'm sad to say but I'm seriously considering changing my pride and joy barra for something more... comfortable, less wild, less rough. something I could use more for commuting.
was considering triumph tiger 1050. had a test ride- completely different, comfortable, but lacking ... this spark.
what do u think? any other suggestions?
cheers guys

Man up, and sort your bike out. I can do hundreds of miles in a day on mine. My wrists ache in towns, but that goes once on the open road. 45+mpg, 190+mph, yet also able to plod around, and sized for taller/larger riders. And I'm no spring chicken, at 40.

I don't have any serious problems with wrists. its back and my knees mostly.

but its not only that. I just lost this passion for supersport bike somewhere along the way, this joy if u know what I mean.
didn't take my bike out a lot this "summer" maybe that's why.
and I know I'm not using this bike to its potential. I gave up an idea of putting the knee down, I'm not doing track days anymore.
I really like my bike  but maybe its time for a change.

Alongside my barra, I use a 2010 1400GTR for commuting. 104 miles a day.

It is a great bike. Big and heavy compared to the 10, but has a decent amount of grunt and handling for enjoying yourself on the twisties. I find I rarely use the 10 for the commute any more, as I find the GTR fun enough, however there is no getting away from that litre sportsbike luncacy that a 10 gives. Howling out of corners in 2nd, with the front tyre an inch from the floor is something that more sensible bikes (like the GTR) simply cannot replicate.

Martin.

It's a barra so I can see why you'd want to change, but just stick a brown paper bag over your helmet for the time being

OK, well theres things you can do about back and knees - adjustable rearsets and clipons and a double-bubble screen for starters.

Maybe you just need someone like yourself to ride with more often? To get more out of the bike, and generally to get out more. I'll happily kit-up for just an hour, but i'm more fussy who i'll ride all day with. For me, its a waste of fuel going on a sight-seeing ride and spending most of the day below the speed limits.

As for getting your knee down, speak to anyone in the know, and they'll all tell you its a disadvantage on the roads. Its something for heros, wannabe's etc. It works on the tracks with long smooth corners, but you only have to watch the TT and similar road races to see how little they do it on the road. Leon Haslam said that the road isn't suited to such extremes of body movement, and in doing so, it actually makes a rider slower and less composed.

So maybe you just need to change where you ride, who you ride with, even how you ride to regain some of the enjoyment of owning a litre superbike. For me, the slight discomfort is worth it everytime I head out knowing that i'm one of the fastest things on the roads.

I found my 'barra a bit cramped, even with adjustable footrests, it has a lower seat than a ZX6R which probably explains it.  I swapped mine for a Z1000daf, it's much more suited to road use and still has a lot of get up and go for when you want to have fun, although it's no supersport when it comes to handling.
