Crownan's upgrade/modification thread (Gen 1)

(1/8) > >>

Crownan:
I've been meaning to do this ever since I got the 10R last year but have only just got round to starting it!

Just a thread to document any mods/replacements/upgrades and to share if anyone else is interested. So I'll start from the top:

The ebay pics of when I first found her back in March 2011...

Mods included braided front brake lines, steering damper, tinted double bubble screen, R&G bar ends, rear seat hump and that GP trumpet exhaust. Was so loud when I went to see it I asked him to chuck in the other can (Carbon Can Co.) and swap them over!

Purchased it on 31st March 2011.

Crownan:
When I got it home I gave it another good look over and found that one of the fork seals was weeping and the front brake pads were pretty low so I got that all sorted straight away.

Also decided that the previous owners sticker additions sucked so I went about destickering it a bit; removed the wheel tape, ZX10R seat unit stickers, Carbon Can Co. and the huge Scorpion one on the swingarm:

Also thought that I'd check out the GP trumpet-like 'end can' that the previous owner had been running and f**k me was it loud!! Far too frickin loud! Looked great but there is no way I could run it in public like that! So went back the Carbon Can Co. one that came on it.

The reason kids cry and why I couldnt ride it on the road... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1l6SFVhCeyU

Decided that I wanted to do the brake upgrade asap as the stock setup was CRAP! So I went about ordering a set of 2009 ZX6R Nissin Calipers and Radial MC. Decided that I also needed to make the rear caliper match so I sourced a 2006 ZX10R unit as they came in black and a HEL braided black hose. I also got the rear pegs, hangers and the front heel guards powder coated black.

New Calipers fitted May 2011:

When fitting the calipers the brakes were so good that I decided I didnt need the MC too and so sold it on.

Crownan:
I then went on a 2,200 mile round trip to the alps (pics can be seen here: http://www.zx10r.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,19787.0.html )

During the trip I dropped the bike, luckily the only damage was a half snapped left foot peg, could've been a lot worse!!

She came home covered in crap, a bit of wear and tear too like the powder coating rubbing off the heel guards, a bit of wear on the paint on the rear seat unit due to the tail pack straps and of course, obliterated tyres!

Crownan:
So of course I needed new tyres, pegs and a bloody good clean!

So I got a set of Metzeler M5s put on:

A got a pair of brand new black footpegs from a 2009 ZX6R and fitted those:

And gave it a bloody good clean:

Here you can see some of the wear from the tail pack on the trip:

August 2011 - Time for its first service in my hands.

Stripped her down and did an oil change for Castrol Power Race 1, new K&N oil filter, new NGK Iridium Spark Plugs (what a bitch!) and cleaned and re-oiled the air filter. And of course another clean

Assume this is the 'clean air' system?
