As far as I know the law says it needs to be on the left hand side in front of the riders position.

For the last 6 years I have kept my disc in my wallet and never had problem even when stopped for wheeling/speeding.

As horse says,s its all on "the system" nowadays so the police will know before they stop you if you have tax and insurance.
I think the law still states it should be displayed on the left of a bike but i cant remember reading about the last time this was upheld, loads of people i know carry it around in the wallet or just keep it at home.

On some bikes (ones I park on the road) I keep the tax disc in my wallet so they don't go missing, on my 2009 ZX10 I have it taped at the bottom of the screen from the inside you have to remove the screen to get to it but it is readable enough (even through the black screen).

When I got stopped on my gixer on the A217 the copper tried to be stroppy about the tax being in my wallet, it is an offence not to display tax and it used to be a fine but this will only happen if you really piss the officer off.

anywhere so long as its visible. there are two seperate laws. one says the vehicle must be taxed the other says that the disc must be visible on the vehicle.its an offence not to display it.hope that helps.
