I personally replace the chain whenever the C&S get changed. Not sure if thats what everyone else does.

With the chain at the correct tension try lifting it away from the rear sprocket (at the 3 o'clock position). There should be some movement but not enough to see daylight through. If you've got excessive "play" then it needs changing.
Other times it may need changing...
If its developed an excessive tight spot (chains always have tighter and looser points)
If its reached the end of its adjustment
If the sprockets are knackered

There's no reason a chain shouldnt do more that 8k if its well maintained

Check your manual mate, usually you set the chain tension up then measure off a set number of links (like 22 links) the distance between these pins has to be within a range.
Your sprockets will wear down as well, check the front as its smaller it will look 'hooked'.

But at 8k, unless you have neglected the chain it should give a lot more miles.
Fitting a scottoiler will give it oil all the time and extend its life, but some don't like the mess.

May be teaching you to suck eggs here but I only oil my chain after a ride when the chain is warm.
Soaks into the links nicely and you get less "fling ".

Even the factory chains are still "master linked" pal that'll prob be the gold coloured link you're on about.

I had a chain snap on my 08 plate at ten thousand miles and I lubed it every ride but I'm partial to a wheely or two.anyways it Fu barred the gearbox.so if it in doubt just change the chain and sprockets it's cheaper than a new gearbox

I had one snap going into the hairpin at Mallory on my old RRp FireBlade road bike. That was only 7k old and well maintained.
To give DiD their credit, I wrote them a letter. They asked me to send the chain in, get a quote for the repairs (CF hugger, Swingarm and sprocket cover) and they settled up no quibbles.

My point? What he said :sign5:

hi guys had look at chain today, with rear wheel on the floor, if i pull  the chain away from rear sprok about 3.15 on a clock there is no more than 2mm of movment , and from the same position if i push up and down on the chain it moves betwen the teeth about 1mm. dont know if you will know what i mean but i did take pics but cant put them up cos had to have my laptop reset to day1 last week and need to get new licence for my jpeg compressor.

As long as the chain hasnt got horrendous tight spots it sounds fine to me m8.
