SORN
« on: October 26, 2011, 12:13:18 AM »

Just one for people to be aware of . . . In April this year I bought a secondhand GSXR1100 frame from E b*y, previous owner filled in the log book with my details and gave it to me, before I sent it off (in April) I checked if the frame was SORN, it was about to expire so I renewed the sorn and sent off the V5, I have now (yes just this week)  received a fine for failing to declare SORN ! It turns out that once the V5 goes into a change of owner any SORN remaining is cancelled ! So I now have a crap fine to pay for a bare frame that's sat in my garage since April and I didn't receive a road tax reminder for it either.  For some odd reason though I'm only being fined from the end of August despite the fact I got the new V5 back in April ??, the nice lady at the DVLA couldn't explain this  . . . . .

just a thought ...but i bet its taken so long cos they have contacted the previous owner for the fine and he disputed it and told them he sold the bike and gave your name . then when they got your part of the v5 they have just passed it on to you ? i would dispute it . have you got a receipt from the seller with a date on ? so you can prove it was not yours at the time the fine was issued ?

on the log book there is a part to put the date of change of ownership, was that filled in when you got the frame ?

Fight it.  There was something on the tv a few weeks back.  DVLA don't know there arse from their elbow, they were sending fines out to people who hadn't even had the renewal reminder.
