Towing
« on: March 17, 2011, 12:39:27 PM »

Having only passed my test last June i'm confused over towing regs. Can someone confirm i've understood this correctly?
This is the official description
Description
Motor vehicles with a MAM not exceeding 3500kg having not more than 8 passenger seats with a trailer up to 750kg. Combinations of towing vehicles in category B and a trailer, where the MAM of the combination does not exceed 3500kg and the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle.

So for instance if towing a bike on a trailer with a weight under 750kg and a combined weight of under 3.5t is acceptable on a B category without the need to have B+E entitlement?

Reet,

If your towing something less than 1ton and not combining 3.5t with towing vheicle weight your ok.

I had this issue last year taking my caravan to BSB rounds. My caravan weights 750k, and my van was 1.5t so i was legally allowed to tow it. However now i have a 3.5t LWB van im not.

So yes.. Your ok.

Hi bud so your vans weight is 3.5t or is this fully allowed laden weight ? because if the van is say 2.25 tonne you will still be allowed to tow your caravan ?

My van is classed as a 3.5t Van with a payload of 1.5t Its the weight it says on the V5 if its a commercial vehicle. Yea, if the van was 2.25 i would.

So if Im reading this right I can't tow my 1500kg caravan with my long wheel base 318 Sprinter? Or is it that your van is registered as a commercial. EG for business, if so it should have a tachograph fitted. My brother in law got pulled last year in his Transit with a race car trailor and got a fine as the van was registered to the business.

The above only applies to people that take there test after 97 I think it is, that require B+E testing. People that passed before have grandfather rights.

No, the towed vehicle must not be more than 750k.

My van is registered to me personally, but used for business and doesnt need a tacho. Its just the insurance which is busuiness use.

Ive been doing a bit of reading up on this as what Mr Marv said is partialy true.
Euro specs for my van a 318 cdi Sprinter are as follows.
GVM 3500 KG.
Front axle load 16450.
Permissible rear axle load is 2250Kg.
Unladen weight as to my vans length is as follows.
Unladen weight 2330Kg.
Payload capacity 1220 kg = 3750Kg my unit is rated to 3500kg as to European specifications.
Trailer load weight with Brakes: 2000Kg.
Trailer weight with out brakes 750Kg. (As mentioned by My Marv)
My caravan is less than 2500KG so I'm alright, if it exceeds the maximum specification slightly; the ball weight can be increased without impacting on the Sprinters towing capacity to 2500KG an increase of 500Kg legally can be achieved.
When adding cargo in the rear depending on windows fixed seats in the rear and fixed fit-outs etc, this weight needs to be subtracted from your Total GVM to access the balance of a remaining permissible carrying weight.
In effect your combined GVTW is maxed out at 5.5 Metric Tonne. Im prettywell under that with the caravan max travel weight being 1500kg I max out at just over 5Te.

So its worth doing a bit of research just to make sure you don't fall foul of the nice people at VOSA.

If you towing an unbraked trailor then it can't exceed 750kg.
Remember if you have passed your test in the last couple of years then you must take another test before you can legaly tow anything.
