Unlucky first ride
« on: March 22, 2011, 07:43:54 PM »

Took the bike out for the first ride after the long winter hibernation, blue skies ,clean roads and double figure temparatures and big smile on my face...... but after about 4 miles a big bloody wood screw went straight through the rear tyre  :crybaby2: managed to limp back home. Dont think it can be repaired as it's right in the tread so thinest part. So looking for new tyres, checked out all the info from you guys on here, but have read some favourable reviews in the bike press about the new  Dunlop sportmax sportsmart, has anyone tried them on an 04/05 or if not , any model . Need a tyre that can do most things although I spend most time fast road riding, occasional track day .

bollocks allways the way  [wall]

a repair depends more on how close to the centre of the tyre it is (the closer the better) but if the tyres close to done anyway prolly worth changing it reguardless

It's right in the centre and theres plenty of meat left on the tyre but its right down deep in the tread, don't have much faith in it being plugged, but will try.

No issues repairing it in the centre on the tread - they happliy rate plugs on Z rated tyres.

will plug fine i reckon being in the tread wont make much of a differance as the majority of the plug is on the inside theyl just cut the bung off flush with the top of the tread so ul be able to see the bung in the tread

I had an 05 which had a screw go through the tyre with 800 miles on the clock and 1 week old  [wall]
I plugged it and finished off the track day and rode for the next 4000 miles on the OE rear tyre no problems whatsoever. Just keep your eye on the tyre pressure on a regular basis.

I have recently fitted Sportsmarts to my 08, Good road tyres, yet to try them on track, but by all accounts the steering is very neutral and in the wet they seem to work well.  :icon_thumleft:

Motorcycle tyres have to be repaired within the limits of British Standard BS159F. Unfortunately, this does not allow repairs on tyres with a Z speed rating or above. Most of todays sportsbikes of 600cc upwards are all fitted with Z or W rated tyres, therefore, these cannot be repaired within the British Standards. A temporary repair can be carried out to get you home or to a local garage, but the tyre would have to be replaced, the use of sealants is not recommended by tyre manufacturers and their use voids any warranty on the tyre.
