I've had a small plate with personal number on my bike for last 5 years and only ever got nicked once and I'm sure that was because i was a bit cheeky after getting stopped for another offence. [wall]

BTW, number plates dont have to be "legal" for an MOT. Just have to be two lines and readable by the tester at 15 yards or so. But, to make sure that the police cameras and speed cameras, which can tell the sex of the dead fly on your back wheel, can read them they have to be the size of Wales!

Might be worth mentioning that it also depends on your riding. If you ride like you stole it then you'll know what could happen, you takes yer chance...etc...etc...etc.... But if your riding is smooth and safe "most" coppers will kindly tell you to change the plate.
However, with the falling numbers of traffic pold about now it's not such an issue, unless you attend high-profile places like bike meets, BSB rounds etc.. then you'd expect to be scrutinised.

This is the official rules regarding reg plates. There's no mention as to the size of the plate anywhere, just the characters and spacings.  B-)

163mm high x 174mm wide if you have a 5 or 6 character plate.
163mm high x 228mm wide for a 7 character plate.
IF you use the correct size letters/numbers at 64mm high x 44mm wide with 10mm stroke and 10mm spacings and 11mm borders all round.

Love having a 5 chatacter plate  [whistle]

i was under the impression that all motorcycle plates had to be on two lines, but it appears from the DirectGov site that this only applies to bikes reg before 1st Sept 2001

see http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/PersonalisedRegAndNumberPlates/DG_181503

so i am at least legal with my 5 digit plate being on on one line although it a bit smaller than it should be :-)

It does have to be 2 lines, the wording on that site is a little ambiguous but I think it was referring to front plates on bikes when it mentions 2 lines.  :dontknow:

Yeah but it doesn't actually mention 2 lines anywhere else. Only with regards to front plates! I think MOT regs state 2 lines tho.

My mate keeps getting done, he has a one line plate on his R1, you'd think he'd get the hint really. The latest on slaught on him was  static camera van, didn't get him for speeding but they have sent him a Sec 172 notice to declare who was riding (defaults back to the registered keeper if you fail to declare) so no doubt he will get a summons. I understand that repeat offenders will have their plates withdrawn so they have to re register. This ANPR lark will only recognise legal digits which is why the fuzz get upset with slanting/small/disfigured or altered digits, that is what they are justifying the fine is for. Like many on here say, a 7x5 does not draw adverse attention and looks in keeping with the bike. Isn't it strange in this crap EU state we live in that we keep coming off worse. Every other country has much smaller plates than us and can lawfully ride/drive and in complete anonimity around the UK as the ANPR system cannot read their plates let alone check insurance/tax (they often aren't paying any!). That said its like the tinted visor/race can debate, if you don't want to take the chance don't do it, we all know the rules....

I just dont understand all the bollox about ANPR cameras being unable to read a slightly undersize plate? Have the makers of ANPR cameras never heard of zoom lenses? thought these devices were supposed to be high tech.

Er, gotta correct you there, letters should be 64mm high and although the tester is not required to measure them, 'characters which are obviously not the correct height' are a rfr (reason for refusal)
