how to check tyres........... properly!!
« on: March 04, 2011, 05:04:05 PM »

today i had a bumclenching moment, as i went to accelerate out in to hornchurch high street i lost the back end one one way then it came back the other way before straigtening up again! looked kinda kool to people on the street but wasnt much fun for me (thought i was gonna go big time) as i drove home i couldnt help thinking that my back end was moving about a bit to much, so when i got i looked at my back tyre. tread looks ok but the tyre was warm to touch but seemed quite smooth is this normal or am i winding myself up, also it was a bit cold today so i was quite tense while riding, the tyres are corsa 111s   :icon_scratch:

Your tyres are supposed to get hot or they won't grip.
Corsa III's will be shite in this weather though - even though the sun is out its still only 3-5 degrees so the road temp will only be around the same.
Check your pressures though as that may of had an effect.
My guess is the road/air temp and the fact you have trackday tyres on.

B-)  i know there suppose to get hot!! hammy i was only sayin that to explain the situation, i was more worried that the surface of the tyre was quite smooth to touch

Hammy, Corsa III's aren't track tyres. They're an out of date road tyre with a triple compound, with the hardest compound in the middle for longevity and milage, so therefore should be able to cope with cold/road conditions better than the 'softer' compounds on the shoulder of the tyre. But from experience the corsa III's are useless in the cold and seem to 'go off' quick for a road tyre which is shocking, but then they are a 4yr old tyre and have been replaced with stickier road/track tyre combinations.
My advice to Colin/docta13 is replace them with something more up to date. As Pirellis don't have a very good history of retaining years of grip.

I used Corsa III's as an intermediate tyre on my C1H track bike.  I used them at Le Mans last year on a fairly cold and damp track, and once warmed up a bit they were fine.   Its difficult to get the temperature into the tyres on any road bike this time of year though.

Jay the Corsa III's were touted as being a road/trackday tyre by everyone at the time.
They are out of date now though and personally I wouldn't go near them or any Pirelli on the bike.
Everyone I know who has binned it has been using Corsa's

:iamwithstupid:  Corsa III's are fahooking shite....got a virtually brand new set in the garage that I took off to replace with 2CT's.

Never inspired any confidence...just couldn't get enough heat into them in UK weather and always felt like they were squirming around.

I'm gonna keep em, as I may use them for a trackday though as scrubs, because they may be awesome if you could get enough heat into them.  But for me....on the 10r....an almost dangerous option (personally).

Glad Hammy and Bunny have the same thoughts on how shiiiiiiiiite they are. Low sided at Snetterton while on Corsa III's. We should have our selves a little bar-b-que with all the surplus sets about.

Well, there has to be at least one dissenter  :pottytrain2:.... I am having to change my 111s this year as they are absolutely cream crackered. I did 3 trackdays and 4500 road miles on them and I really like them. (Even got my knee down in the wet at Brands. Granted the last day at Waddington the were complaining -look at the pic, no surprise really!- but I still got loads of feedback and I wasn't slow on them... (ask chaosspunx!)

I think I'll be going with diablo corsa rossos next, I really am happy with the pirellis.

I got 3 track days and 4500 miles from mt DC111s, but they still look like new compared to Flippers.  Fancied a change, so going for Sportsmarts.

Put 2K on my gen 1 before I chopped it, Sportsmarts still looked like new with nice even wear and good grip wet or dry, top tyre and I'd have them again  :icon_thumleft:

Funny realy, cos after the D208's I had once, I never thought I could trust Dunlop again  :-/
