What You need to pack for a Bike tour (Germany 2011)
« on: May 06, 2011, 07:09:46 AM »

Hi All

This thread is specific to the Wheeltrax 2011 Ring tour, but not exclusive, so please add your recommendations  :icon_thumleft:
Please keep it serious for the time being and for the benefit of everyone doing a bike tour.

As bikes have 'limited' space depending on your luggage; What is Essential to pack, what is Good to pack, for the trip

Muchos Gracias  :headbang:

Documents,
Insurance, Licence, MOT (if Required), EU Compliance Notice, Medical Insurance, Breakdown Policy.

A good idea is to save a folder in your email account and place copies into it, that way if you were to lose any of the above you have access to email and print the copies off.

Firstly hat of to ya fella for starting such a useful thread! BHP me thinks  :icon_thumleft:
Couple of points re Health and Emergencies..
1. Absolutely, without exception, take a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
If you need medical assistance abroad, of any type, you will need this!
I believe you can get em at any Post Office or look here...
https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/startApplication.do
2. Have an ICE (in case of emergency) contact on your mobile phone.
Not an absolute necessity this one but a damn good idea. If you dont know what this is I'll try to explain.
If you need urgent medical attention (and are unable to communicate) paramedics are trained to look for ICE contacts on phones.
You can have ICE1, ICE2 etc but they will only check the "i's" in your contact list so "johnICE" would be no good.
The person whos number is listed under ICE should know any relevant medical information about you and your blood type. Sounds complicated but its not really.
3. Cash - Dont assume that everywhere will accept your card! If they do its a bonus.
4. Syphon hose - 2 mtrs of coiled up hose under the seat takes up no room at all. It can save huge amounts of frustration should you be unlucky enough to run out of fuel (a handy thing to carry at all times in my opinion).

For the Wheeltrax trip dont worry about chainlube!
Its a pain to carry so I provide it free for the duration of your tour  :glasses9:
You'll probably find that you wont need chains n locks too. Garaged parking and very little theft in the region. I havent used so much as a disc lock since I left the UK!

Tips:
a.Pack all your stuff in bin liners coz wet kit is no fun.
b.Water tight pouches are available to buy for very little money. These are good to keep your docs in. Driving license, passport, tickets, money, wallet etc.
c.Make sure you can access your bank account (cash points) before traveling. A lot of banks restrict card usage to deter theft.
d.Have you got roaming enabled on your phone? another source of frustration when you need the phone to get you out the poo!

One thing me and the misses found useful is vacuum bags get them in boots different sizes put your clothes in them and got a zip seal and a one way valve so put clothes in zip up and roll up on floor and it pushes the air out .not only reducing  the size by half also waterproof.

A quick note on the travel insurance side

please make sure that it covers riding a motorbike on a tour, ie the majourity of the trip will be spent on the bike

there are so many companies that give travel insurance but in the small print it doesnt cover the use of a motorbike so in essence its useless

oh and as for travel kit, CABLE TIES CABLE TIES AND A FEW MORE CABLE TIES  [whistle]

If you're taking chargers etc. you'll also need a plug converter..
