My view.....get as close to legal as possible.  I am think mine is something like 7.5 x 5.5, slightly smaller lettering but looks near as standard.  And its passed its MOT and never been stopped.  It was MOT'd by a reputable place and they didn't even ask (just make sure its got a reflective strip on).

My view....don't take the piss, and you'll be fine!  There are some right fecking muppets around who ruin it for the rest of us!

Steady on old chap! I've been known to run a few less than legal number plates in my time. I know the consequences, its my choice and not your place to call me a muppet. It does no harm to anyone!

Jamma...open forum I have every right to say my view and so totally believe that as responsible bikers we have a duty not to take the piss. In no way was I implying that you personally were one of those muppets but my point stands. The irony of your last statement is that replying as such your kind of self deprecating :-)

The guy started the thread asking for my view. I gave it, it you don't agree that's cool. But don't take it personally it's just "my opinion". I've seen so many lads on the road and on forums who take liberties and push the legal boundaries. Then whinge about the fuzz hassling them and being knobs.

As I said, smaller is fine and does look more aesthetically pleasing than the snow plough we get as standard.

No offence taken bud. Just saying that its not really a serious crime and for those of us who run with small plates but are otherwise reasonably responsible, labelling us with the "fecking muppet" moniker seems a little strong.

thanks for the replies chaps, i only wanted to know because i have just bought a evotech tail tidy which is the one you can use the original indicators on, but when i put it on last night with the original reg plate, the reg plate seemed to block some of the indicator, has anyone else had this problem? Thanks goldie

i had the same problem, so i shaved the corners off it and got pulled for that rather than having a smaller plate.

want a small numberplate but still stay completely legal?

do what I did and get yourself a private reg number with less characters than the standard 7  B-)

(thats not the actual reason I bought a private reg by the way, lol)

In theory though you could have a plate the size of a pack of playing cards and be legal if your reg has sufficiently few characters in it.

For the record mine is 6 characters and I run with a plate approx 7 x 6, 100% legal.

at the end of the day, we all know the legal requirement and each try to bend it a little or in some cases a lot.

You make your choices and balance the risk just like everything else in life  :icon_thumright:

the less characters private plate option is a sensible one though  :icon_thumleft:

I always thought that not only had the numbers and letters got to be a set size but also the plate itself. I've had strip plates for nearly 20 yrs and never had a problem but maybe I've just been lucky. So long as they aren't tiny I can't see what the problem is.

i decided to go for one that had the same size letters, but had them a bit more bunched up so i could cut 20mm off the side and 20mm off the bottom. im very happy with it and hopefully i wont get pulled as it isn't stupidly small
thanks for all the advice and replies chaps its good to hear so many different opinions  :headbang:
