small number plates
« on: February 17, 2011, 09:20:06 PM »

hello chaps has anyone fitted a small number plate? If so do you get much aggro from the old bill? And do you get fined? Any input would be greatly appreciated thanks goldie

its a funny one this cos some people go small some people arent really bothered, i had the smallest plate ever on my r6 (D8CTA) and never got stopped. but ive got a standard size plate on my 10 and am not really worried. dont forget if u do have a small plate and your bike gets nicked its going to be hard for the anprs to read it and hey presto your bikes gonna be long gone. but with everything we do its the risk we take.

I got stopped when i had the 10, had a very narrow plate with a snazzy font. Anyway the plod stopped me and mentioned it would be near impossible for someone to read it if it got nicked,so i went 7x5 and ben ok since and also on the Aprilia.

Someone like Rory's Plates will do you a neat road legal euro plate which will look better than the dealers one with the wide border and his advertising on there. I dont think too small a plate looks the part anymore, but I'm an old codger and others might disagree

I was stopped becuase a cop "thought" I had a small plate but it was a legal size. I think around 1997-1999 (not exactly sure when) the size was slightly reduced for new machines. My bike came from its previous owner with the correct, slightly smaller size and the correct font. The guy who stopped me ended up rowing about it with his superior partner at the side of the road!  :boxing: He was sure I should have the book thrown at me but luckily the higher ranking guy was had some humanity. I was given a lecture by the nasty one though because the plate didnt have a british standard mark on the plastic so it must have been supplied from a show plate manufacturer and may have been unsafe in an RTA! While this was going on someone was getting mugged somewhere  [whistle]  [whistle]

I had a 7x4.5 on previous bikes for many years and never got stopped, but have returned to the standard size as it does'nt really bother me any more.

thanks for the replies chaps, i only wanted to know because i have just bought a evotech tail tidy which is the one you can use the original indicators on, but when i put it on last night with the original reg plate, the reg plate seemed to block some of the indicator, has anyone else had this problem? Thanks goldie

Yes I had the same problem with the Evotech tail tidy ,I mounted the numberplate bolts through the two lower holes , it still obscures the indicators a bit but not too much, also it passed the MOT no problem and when seen from a distance the indicators were very clear when flashing :icon_thumright:

had a 6x2 on mine for a while ,never had any trouble whilst it was on , put the standard size on and the baffle in the race can because the tyres were borderline legal !. just in case  :tongue3:
