If you can get a set of accounts including the return on any capital employed that would be a start. The balance sheet will give you a heads up on the financial status and you also need an idea of ongoing liabilities and contracted income.

P m me anytime of you like. I can't give you financial advice but I know plenty who could..... with the right information.

I will have to get some info together.

To be honest me and my colleague were thinking about starting on our own. But this is ready made and i am sure we could make a go of things.

I had an idea of offering him enough money to clear the debt as he is personally liable for it and then telling him to bugger off.

We have enough work until the middel of December but we alwys mange to land enough work when we need it and have never really been that quiet, we always operated with 8 fitters during last year.

Thanks for the advice so far.

I have seen several businesses go from strength to strength when someone with a seroius amount of 'get up and go' thinks: "just a minute, if I can get the backing I can take this forwards myself cos I've got a serious amount of knowledge in my field".

Funding aside, you must be:

1.positive and happy about what you are doing - it shows big time if you are
2.flexible and quick to respond to opportunites and threats - make hay and dont take threats lying down
3.very diligent with your day to day financial management - I know it sounds obvious but pay your suppliers on time, dont give anything to anyone without being paid and dont trade on slim profit margins becuase turnover does NOT equal profit.

Best wishes.

Rich.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

It all makes sense what you are saying. I am going to try and get some info together. Our accounts lady is on the ball so hopefully she can help out when we are ready to make a move.

Just to pick up one point.

Suppliers must be paid on time but it is bloody hard when no bugger pays any valuations from  months work on site. Especially when the lads need to be paid.

It is a big juggling act.

Yes I appreciate that - it was harsh advice (sorry) but the reason is that the invoices snowball if not not dealt with and one month soon rolls into the next. Suppliers are super quick these days to chop a credit account down in size based on the advice of their underwriters, regardless of their own longstanding relationship with a company so its necessary to be timely.

Yeah, its gonna be tough if youre trying to turn things around. Maybe (and this isnt critisism) you'd need to tackle bringing in the money from valuations sooner...its not fair on you that people take their time to pay.

As far as the juggling money bit goes, try to plan ahead with a Cash Flow Forecast (apologies if any other replies have mentioned this, I cant remember now waht i read last week). An accountant will be able to help you or you could get a book on business accounting basics.

This is all assuming the opportunity is viable of course. I really do wish you well.
