09 modification help !!
« on: May 19, 2010, 10:38:18 PM »

Hello all

I got a dilema thats been bugging me since i got my 09 white zx10r in october 2009

I want to modify the  standard end can because its dam ugly, but  at the minute i cant stretch to the cost of a new pipe coz the insurance is due, a new baby as arrived and im now skint  :emb: i was hoping you could tell me if it would be ok to either spray the can black or anthracite or cover it with faux carbon fibre that just sticks on like your local sign place would do or would it look total crap, i thought if i made it darker it wouldnt stand out as much, eventually im gonna get the Akrapovic carbon slip on.

Any help on tarting up the standard end can would be greatly appreciated, also would the 2009/2010 ZX6R end can work or would it cause issues :iamwithstupid:, the racefit  cans look smaller than the ZX6R can thats why im wonderin as its a tidy looking can.

A mod you can do on the 2008/2009/2010  models is remove the little black container thats just behind the lights thats attached to the bottom of the air intake duct then silicone a rubber gromit over the remaining hole to stop air leakage and this gives you the full roar of the direct ram air system giving your bike a more beefy sound as your accelerating, i got this mod off ZX10R.net

Thanks for your help

isnt the little black box a water drain for moisture that is pulled into the air intake system?

Not sure wot it's for, I looked it up in the workshop and it's doesn't say, as I don't ride my 10 in the rain it shouldn't be a problem, should it ? :icon_scratch: I re checked zx10r.net and there's no horror stories bout it there and as the hole is only in the middle moisture would still pass it anyway, I posted it here to find out if it was ok or not so thanks for your input I think I will ask at a Kawasaki dealership wot the containers actually for

A K&N air filter would give you more intake noise if that's what you are after.

No reason why you cant paint the end can, you could use Sperex satin or as I have on my old slingshot engine, normal basecoat and 2 pack clear, make sure you give it a light key up using a grey scotchbrite pad or similar and give it a light coat of primer to aid adhesion (only needs a see through coat). I think the can will get too warm for fake carbon as the heat seems to soften the adhesive.  ;-)

Andicog, cheers mate this was the kind of answer I was looking for, I was thinking of going for a matt black finish if that's posible or would I need the clear lacquer (think that's how ya spell it) to keep the paint on there

I would be very wary of putting conventional primer on an exhaust.

A mate of mine did that....then sprayed stain black heat dispersant paint over the top. It lasted about 2 days until it had burned off in big chunks.

An exhaust will get much hotter than an engine crankcase. You need proper heat resistant or heat dispersant paint and NO primer underneath.

If you want matt black then just use Sperex VHT or similar, no need for  clear coat (I cant spell lacquer either . . . )   :icon_thumright:

I would agree with you that the exhaust obviously gets hotter than crankcases and even hotter than the head area, we are talking about a silencer and I'm sure there would be no problem, if heated uniformly 2 pack paint and standard base coat will take enough heat to fry an egg on the surface. how hot do you recon a black car roof gets in Saudi heat ?   Sperex actually used to recommend cellulose  primer under their VHT engine paint when applying over bare metal.  Here's my gixer engine, done 4 years ago with half coat of aerosol primer, basecoat and 2 pack clear, still perfect even around the exhaust ports. If using Sperex and its not over bare metal there is no need for primer anyway, quick key up and (as Brian Cant used to say . . )  spray away !
