No doubt some of you will have seen or read about the extortionate prices quoted, and paid, for car hire during the airspace closures when folk were trying to get into Northern Europe. I have heard of prices varying from 1500 to 2500 Euros.

These F*$kin' Robbing Ba$$74rds should be named by the people being interviewed while they are being interviewed. Ok it is a oneway trip, so the hire company has got to get the car back, and into a different country but that is, without doubt, taking the **** !

I know it probably wouldn't make much difference there business, if they were named, but it would make some people think twice about using them. Somebody did drop a hint that one of the companies was a "name" so it's not just your "mickey mouse" outfit trying to make a quick buck.

In times of need, like that, the last thing you need is somebody getting you "over a barrel".

Nothing to do with the crisis as it's been a charge in place for the last few years, used to work in the trade and it was put in place to offset the loss of the vehicle use for a longer period of time and the cost of getting the car back. Part of the cost is also because of greater risk of theft of the vehicle which has traditionally happened.

Just think however if you were a hire car operator and all of a sudden demand for vehicles outstripped the number of vehicles you had and you were likely to lose booked business with existing long term clients and therefore a significant chunk of your regular operating cash flow what would you do ??

That may be so, and I'm not doubting what you're saying, but from my experience of hireing cars you are not able to take them out of the country they were hired in. So I would suggest that the people who have hired the cars, at these prices, have told the hire companies that they just want a "basic" 24 hr hire and because of the "crisis" have been charged an extortionate rate.
