Hi Ian mate....I think everyone has said at least one thing of merit....even Silky
Personally, I love HG stores....and as yet mate, haven't been to yours to pass proper comment but feedback seems to very good.
When I first started biking, my instructors used to take all CBT, DAS or Advanced bikers into the local HG store, as one of their brew stop offs. The instructors got some discount for passing some trade along, and the riders got a nice brew (well, only once they replaced the CLIX machine with a kettle, some nice mugs and proper coffee). PLus a chance to peruse the shelves and pick up some bargains. Again, sometimes the HG manager would say 5% on anything you buy today as your with Rick from XXX Training. So a win win.
I did my CBT, and DAS in about a 6 month period and used to go in with my mate when I was on the back of his bike. I got to know the staff so well was lovely, and the fact my rack in the garage is full of HG stuff says not only did I buy it, but I would also recommend it.
They also had a really good mix of staff...young, old, mad and sane.... But all knowledgeable. And they always seem to get the right blend of being attentive but not pushy. But always having a "even if you want to just stretch you legs for twenty minutes walking round my shop, thats fine" feel to the place.
For Sale board is worth a look...local lads/lasses selling bikes....with photo, details and name. Again, adds a local/personal touch to a chain store. Which is often hard to do...
Promotions, Dyno Days, Forum sponsership could all add to promotion of local stores. Why not speak to local Bike clubs and see if you can throw some incentives there way to promote the shop....give some 5-10% vouchers for instance with a code relating to local bike clubs etc. I.e HGZX10R. You can then show your promotions are working and HG reep the benefits....win win.
Anyhoooo...thats my penneth.
