New Arm
« on: April 03, 2010, 10:17:28 PM »

So after much grief  with the nitromorse  and a few hours with  some scotchbrite my 08 arm is just about done, just need pennies for a new chain and I can finish it off.

Looks real good mate. I was thinking of doing the same but wasn't sure if you can buy them like that or if it's got to be a DIY. Let us know how you did your's and how long it took.  :icon_thumright:

It took around 8 hours from start to finish, I used little over half a litre of Nitromorse, worst part is the sand cast bit, found a suede brush (soft brass or copper bristles) works well with the Nitromorse ,the extruded parts are really easy as paint just curls up and falls off if you leave the stripper to do its stuff for 20 mins,  arm had a  few factory sanding marks so used 320 wet and dry with washing up liquid followed by a red scotchbrite, It could also be polished or left in the 320 finish for a more industrial look,  not sure how long the finish will last in bad weather as obviously its just bare alloy, although  the sandcast parts came up ok I have masked them out  carefully around the welds and primed and painted them  with fine silver basecoat , it still looks like bare alloy but is at least protected from the weather.   may have it powdered next winter if it starts to fur up, Aerotech do a great powder that looks similar to bare alloy .and recon the frame and arm would look good whilst still being weather proof.

good job  :icon_thumleft:

next time use wax on sand paper. it stops it burning the Aluminium and use water with the scotchbrite. . As for weather proof.. give it a coat of car wax now and then. Will help to protect it..

p.s. you want a job? thats better than some of my blokes work..!

lol

Used water and washing up liquid (fairy liquid to keep my hands as soft as my face. . . ),  never tried wax and sand paper, will give that a go next time, I use Scotchbrites wet, but when I used to paint cars we were told by 3m never to use water with them as it removed their coating ??? only use panel wipe ??  Do I want a job ? sure do !  Anyone out there who wants a VW/Audi trained painter (16yrs exp)  who's been oddly driving a bus for a few years please feel free to contact me ! :icon_thumright:  Did this in my shed ,
