Daytime MOT
« on: March 11, 2010, 05:30:48 AM »

I'm sure this question has been asked a  thousand times, Daytime MOT, what do I need, at the minute I have a ZX10R with a V5, track bike, no lights, no mirrors etc. I have heard as long as I don't have lights or mirrors I don't need them, all I need is to fit the Reg Plate and a horn and thats me ready to go. I reckon I may need to take the 16.5 Dymags and slicks off and Akrapovic Full Race System and fit all standard parts, keep PC Plod happy. :?:

Hello
im pretty sure you will need a rear light and a brake light, as for the indicators and head lights if you take them of you also have to fully remove the switch gear as well cus if the bike has a switch for a light or a horn then it has to work also, so get em off................

bit of a mine field as everyone has been told different thngs by diffferent MOT stations.

but basically, horn(electric),reg plate and thats it.

i ran my bike with just this on for a yr and was told by the MOT guy that as my bike wasn't older than 3 yrs it didn't need anything doing anyway.

it's worth rememebring though that there are no "daytime MOT's",just a standard MOT with advisories.however i'm not sure your insurance company will be to keen on insuring you with a bike that has been changed from the original spec so much, and if you dont inform them then  there is an accident (your fault or not) you will not be covered. :icon_thumleft:

oh and yes,no 16.5's as you can not get road legal tyres for them.(evern though horse does run them)

Thanks Guys
All helpful stuff, I have the standard wheels and exhaust so no problems there, reference lights it doesn't have any and won't be having any, truthfully I only want a MOT to do a few warm up rides when I get home before a track day, I might just leave it as it is and use the Barracks to belt around, no rules there ha ha.
Cheers M

u need a horn n reg plate n legal tyres n thats it !!! had a load of shit with the police last year over mine, one call to VOSA and one call to coppers n told them who to speak to at VOSA and then another call from police to me to apologise for their unfriendliness towards me and threatening to confiscate the bike !!

any probs with MOT station just ring VOSA as they control them and they will sort it, likewise any shit with the pigs over it just ring VOSA n they will put the nice boys n girls in blue right

Check with your local MOT guy as he's the one who will be issuing you with the ticket  :icon_thumright:

Right have run Daytime Mot for 3 years now, this is what you need:

reg plate- Yes
rear reflector- No
horn- Yes
rear light- No
rear brake light- No
chain guard- No
legal tyres- Yes, but I run 16.5inch cut slicks and my local MOT station has no problem!
side stand/switch- No
kill swich on bars- wouldn't no always had on fitted.

Right now to clear up a few issues, you do not need Mirrors or Indicators, now to the issue off Indicator switch gear: Fitted or not fitted makes no differance, If no indicators are fitted then switch gear irrelevant I ran my bike for 2 years with switch gear fitted but no Indicators.

Now for some little known information, I run a brake light for my own safety but come MOT day I put black tape over it. Now come MOT the tester is not allowed to remove anything from bike ie: tape. So my tester knows I have a brake light under tape  but he can not test it as he can not see it working. So I get a MOT but in the remarks section he puts "tested without lights fitted!" This is what you need on ticket to constitute a "Daytime MOT"

Go to your local mot centre and ask mate, some can be OTT

I know mine  local mot centre is a must for, chain guard its the road legal requirment.
Ref indicators if the switch is there and your bike is 1986+ you must have them on the bike.

had a slabside street fighter last year with NOS on her. NOS went through ok.

Well my bike is 2005 and he has never said anything about switch gear in past 2 years prior to 2009! guessing there must be guide lines and every tester inturprets diffrently. Also have never run chainguard....................

Have read your first post, just thought I would confirm things as question where still being asked afterwards. As for Insurance I'm with Bennetts and they are aware I'm running "Daytime Ticket" I am covered but they have stipulated if I have an accident they will not replace my "Race Bodywork" but replace only with Standard bodywork.
