The poppet valve, would that be the reeds at the intake then?

gasses pass through the crank on a 2 stroke engine,

I'm  familiar with the workings of of a 2t engine, what I can't see is why you'd stick a lump of plastic on the crank to increase the compression.

I understand  how by reducing air space in the  the crankcase  you can increase primary compression (which due to pumping losses isn't necessarily a good thing), but I can't see why it makes engineering sense to do it by putting something onto  a balanced moving object like the crank rather than just directly onto the cases themselves.
