Siezed engine mounts!
« on: December 12, 2009, 08:31:09 PM »

Anyone used a tap or heli coil to rethread summit. Having a bit of a problem with engine mounts on a trials bike, the bolts have become one with the frame!  [wall]
The heads both sheard off so I did all the usual stuff, loose oil, applied heat and vice grips etc and they aint moving!
Looks like they will need to be drilled out but there is no room in the frame to drill straight so the remaining hole will be at an angle and a bit oval shaped.
The frame is stainless steel, will a tap cut a new thread or will the frame be too hard? Would a heli coil or similar be a better option?
Any thoughts?
Cheers.  :icon_thumright:

Hi,
It's a Sherco 250 trials bike. Upper engine bracket fixings that face inwards,  inside frame clearance is about 6-8 inches. The fixings have been welded flush into the frame, so burning them off and welding new ones may be an option, but it'll need stripped right down to the bare frame for that. Want to avoid that if poss, but I think the frame metal will be too hard for tapping a new thread but don't know much about it as I've never done it.
What ya reckon?

You're probably right Andy, I've already gone 10 rounds with it and I'm way behind on points, 2lb mash hammer in tool box keeps catching my eye.  :boxing:

sometimes it's just best to take it to the experts before you make a mess of it   :icon_thumright:
