This language.
« on: December 04, 2009, 08:02:11 PM »

How come all dutch people(almost all dutch people between age 13 and 50) manage to speak more than 3 language's and people from other country's dont want to lern anny other language ?

I dont say that i can correctley write in this language, my sentences are all mixed up and gramaticaly incorrect. I dont think this was a good writing also. But most people do understand me :)

Am i wrong or am i right ? (do you only speak this language or can you speak/write more language's) ?

your english is fine, i can understand it  :icon_thumright:

we tend to learn a second language at school, often french or german and then don't use it  so it's lost

as we are an island, no borders and other languages to contend with (Welsh is not commonly spoken), and the English language is recognised across the world we manage with the one i guess, so don't suffer a need to know other languages really  :icon_thumright:

however, several on here can speak fluent bu**sh*t  [rofl] [rofl] [rofl]  oops that's perhaps just me  [rofl] [rofl]

well...... i can (sort of) speak and write english, i know few words in french, russian and of course polish

but ur absolutely right, most of english people cant speak any other languages, maybe they dont need to, maybe dont want to but the fact is they cant.  Not being rude or offensive to anyone , maybe i just meet wrong kind of people but it looks like they cant. But from the other side before i came over here (UK) in my opinion i had to know the tongue. im not saying i can speak and write correct ( Elizabethan ) english but i should and i try to  improve it all the time. Only english can tell if im doing well or not.

hi Melandri,

basicay we do learn french, spanish, german at school for a few years.
as said earlier we dont use it so it gets forgotten.

i only did french and struggle to remember much.

i learnt myself a decent amount of spanish about 8 years ago as i used to go on holidays to spain and
it helped a lot with the locals. i learnt this from c.d.s and books.

i also have a few 'get by ' words in german and are picking up more and more as i work for an Austrian company.

i think the main reason we dont have to speak another language is because we are lucky as english is the business
language of the world.

also i believe that on the continent you have easy access to english t.v., most pop songs and music is in english.
and you are all exposed to the language at a very early age. if we were in the same situation we would of course
have to learn. we arnt unable to learn we just dont need to.
i do feel ignorant when i go to the continent but i do try as a lot of other people do.

the bottom line is for most people why have something that you dont need?? :dontknow:
the part of the UK where i live has its own strong dialect which to outsiders is another language.
'
examples: 'ar bin ya' means 'how are you'.  'cor' means 'can not',  'am' means 'are',  'ar sid yow a wek afowr' means 'i saw you last week'

mad or what [rofl] [rofl]

@ slapknacker, Laughing my ass off when i read your explanation on why people dont speak other language's (mostley on the part of the dialects).

I have not been to england before but due to the fact that i work at a company that sells and repair's german cars i do have to read and speak some german to understand some things. I speak good dutch good englisch (writing is not so good but like someone said before you can understand), i can also speak a bit of spanish a bit of arabic and some other words of other language's. The words of other language's are mostley curse words :).

I've been active on manny forum's but american and englisch forum's are sooo different. Ill never catch someone on a american forum sayin"Fook me" or something like that :P

Most languag's like englisch dutch german look alike if someone from holland talks slowley to you you might understand. Just like people from spain/ italy/ greece.

it's quite funny that some words in our language mean 2 things in our language or more then 2 things. But if you put them in a different in our language and translate it to englisch they mean different things.

If i write a sentence in dutch can annyone translate it without using a translater ?
Dutch sentence:
"Mijn naam is ralph uit holland en ik moet toegeven dat er best veel raare mensen zijn op dit forum, wel hele gezellige moet ik toegeven."
