well, I finally joined a gym
« on: November 12, 2009, 09:00:20 PM »

Well, I have taken the plunge and joined a gym

This gut and moobs need to go  [whistle]

I never thought that I'd ever join one but I decided that enough was enough and with the dark nights, rain and a need to win a trophy at mountain biking, I need to improve quite a lot to say the least so here we go  ;-)

I'm all inducted and had my first instructed session yesterday and am back before work in the morning

Damn this fitness malarkey  [wall] , but with Chris chasing me around the trails I need to ensure that he stays far enough behind as I've heard all about him when he gets close behind  ;-)you know those 'Welshies' and their wellies  [whistle]

So, I assume that most of you guys are gym fanatics and are wondering what the fuss is about, well I'm an overweight old geezer having a mid life crisis I guess  [rofl] [rofl] [rofl]

Any advise on what to and not to do fellas ?

my initial routine is

1500m rowing, beat your time each day sort of thing  to warm up

20 mins exercise bike (hill climbs and a reasonably high setting )
20 mins cross trainer (random and a mid setting )
20 mins jobbing on treadmill building incline to mid for last 10 mins)

weights to start in 2 weeks as a good and different warm up

so dieting, I eat anything that can be stuck on a fork  [whistle]   i assume more water, less coffee and smaller portions of food as a starter .
I guess i need to understand carbs etc now and take care with what i eat  :-/

Right dude

on the food side im going to sound completely gay now

Find yourself a weight watchers group near you

I started 6 weeks ago and am going strong with a total of 17lbs lost already in 6 weeks

The best thing about it is it has made me completely aware of what i am eating day to day, its not a diet as when you fail slightly with a diet you tend to fall with the "diets dont work for me"

they call it a discovery eating plan, you can eat what you like but its in a points system, if i want to eat a mars bar i can, but its 6 points from my daily allowence of 34

or i can have a banana and packet of snack a jacks for 2.5 points, i know which i might prefer but the banana and snack a jacks are more filling and last longer

after 6 weeks tho my eating habits have completely changed in a much better way

hope its some help dude

good luck  :icon_thumright:

Nice one mate  :icon_thumright:

The other option which I know works and will sound completely daft is check out tesco online as they run a diet club and tailor your needs to your lifestyle.

There's also a Slimming World crowd too

Drink lots of water too

...oh and welcome :D

I've also dicided to get fitter and loose some timber, target is to loose a stone and a half.

My wife is on the weight watchers eating plan so i pretty much eat the same, trying to stay aware from the carbs and coffee, my only down fall is Beer and Wine  :hello2:

Got free weights set up in the garage and brought a mountain bike, I'm planning on 3 weight training sessions a week, 1 mountain bike session with a handful of regular long walks.

We are also going to be green laning most weekend which is good exercise

Hoping to loose a stone by Christmas :icon_thumright:
