you can still get them .  and whats wrong with aprilia rs125....rs250 ...yzf125... cbr125.... Ninja 250R....klx250 ..and there's still plenty of the 80s and 90s bikes out there ...zxr400.. cbr400 and loads moor to add .

I'm not saying don't get a bike  [naughty] just start small till you've got some road confidence  is that a bad thing.
Ive bin quite lucky i was brought up around bikes so i got to appreciate what there capable of from a Yong age .
have you seen someone who's never bin on a bike sit on one and rev it for the first time.......they shit there self .
so now put that same person on a big 600 and say now follow me up the cat&fiddel and see if they can keep up with there mate's who have most likely bin riding bikes for years ... now think if that was your son or daughter would you still treat them the same . cos its still someone's life on that bike .

pleas i know its an old saying but these are the times its for .....don't run before you can walk .....that's why its called              LEARNING

I was a full time instructor for many years and you know what never ceased to amaze me?
All the young bucks planning their first bikes (like cbr6's etc) and the defining moment would always come when you first sit em on an ER500 (or similar).
All of a sudden after only riding 125s the ER was an absolute revelation!

50 bhp is like another planet after a 125 and still plenty to get a novice into trouble. (I class anyone with 2 years or less under their belt as a novice)
Even after passing the DAS test the ability to make the correct judgements on a big bike (600cc+) is not always there.

We have become so used to 100bhp bikes in this day and age that we accept them as normal. A very dangerous thing to do.
Not so long ago the absolute ultimate bike was an RC30 (still holds the lap record at the ring) And that bike was only 114 bhp!

Its time some people took a dose of reality and started riding bikes more to their skill level. Learn on a bike that you can handle till you can stretch the throttle cable everywhere and then move up a level.
Buying a bike just because its cool and powerful is definately not big or clever!
After all this is not a game were playing here. This shit can get real serious real fast.

As an aside my recommended bike for your m8 would be an ER6. Huge fun, stacks of parts to upgrade as and when, handling to compete with other stuff on the road and good re-sale when he comes to get something else. I'd have one!

(the above is only my opinion (which im entitled to) so dont chew my head off if you dont agree)  :icon_thumleft:

because i don't agree with you doesn't make me a twat [wall], i have mates who have scooters and 125's. crash every week and also have a freind who's 1st bike after he passed his test was a gsxr600 and he's never crashed and is now a really quick rider.

it really is down to the indivdual, but agree with wheeltrax that something easy to ride like a er6 is an ideal first bike.

i have a few pals who have jumped str9 onto a 600 sports bike, my experience is its the rider himself.

ive got a pal who drove his polo as if it was a go-kart, excellent driver. a was a little worried about him on a bike wen he was goin thru his DAS,
anyway he got his licence and took it easy and progressed well, very capable rider.

i started a few years ago and got a thundercat wen i was 21, i would say thats a good starter bike as it wouldnt b too bad if it went down the road.

well , another old fart...... I agreee with Roy and Wheeltrax here for sure  :icon_thumright:

where's the fun gone of learning and progressing to bigger bikes  :dontknow:

yes ok I've got a superbike but I'm 43 and have been riding since i was 12 or 13 and still can't believe how fast it can be.I started road riding on my Mums moped and then Dads Honda 90 and loved all of my bikes as i progressed to larger bikes.

There are loads of sensible bikes to start with where the throttle isn't shouting "open me up if you're a man" , life is precious and give him good sensible advice  :icon_thumright:

[naughty] A 600 is fine as a first bike in my experience...

In 2000 I passed my direct access and by the end of the week I brought a brand new ZX6R J1 had it for 7 years and never had a crash. You just have to treat any bike you ride with respect and know your and the bikes limits, a bike will only ever go as fast as you turn that throttle. I actually found it easier to ride than the CB500 I learned on because of the better engine, suspension breaks etc.

I say let the lad get what he wants its his money.  Just because he want's an RR doesnt mean he's gonna be an idiot on it without any respect for his own or others safety.   Also i reckon if he does make a mistake on a set of twisties it wont matter what he's on be it a cbr 600rr or a 400 the outcome would be the same.      :icon_thumright:

I agree, you can't really steer someone off their chosen bike if thats what they've got their heart set on it. He'll learn the hard way if it's an ego thing.
