just back from scotland and it didn't rain!
« on: August 10, 2009, 08:19:56 AM »

have just come back from scotland after doing 1200 miles on my own on the zx10.
1st day went up to perth(motorway)then across to fort william via glencoe, then across to inverness.
2nd day up to john o groats then across to thurso and stayed the night at deerness.
3rd day back to inverness via ullapool(including 40 miles of single lane with passing places).
4th day down to carnoustie to meet the girlfriend at her mothers on the coastal route.
roads were awsome especially at the top where the scenery is breathtaking, everyone should do it at least once.
have been up there several times but this is the first time with no rain [clap]
replaced my supercorsas with diablo stradas for the trip and must say they were faultless as was the zx10.

When you were at Glencoe did you do the loop around through Kinlochleven??
If you didn't you missed one helluva road, it brings you back out at the bridge after glencoe.
Deffo worth going back for  :icon_thumright:
Glad the weather held out for you though.

that's the 3rd time i've tried to get up to the top,the first and second time had to give up because of torrential rain,  this time more than made up for it though.i'll try and get some photos on this weekend or early next week.
on the road from thurso to deerness had a bit of  a laugh with a bloke on a ktm trailie, followed him for about 20 miles and was hilarious to see him scrape his box panniers.stopped at some traffic lights and he said he 'needed more power' [rofl]

Hi Mate,

Thanks for this. I've just booked a 3 day trip in scotland in september, going on my own on zx10. Staying in Kinross (by perth) for 2 nights. Can you recommend any good stop offs must see's etc. Any extra info would really help.  I can't wait, and even if it rains i'm just gonna get into the spirit of it.  This will be my first ever road trip.

sorry for not getting back sooner, but have been really busy.
that's the 3rd time i've been up to scotland on 2 wheels, the first 2 it pissed down and had to turn back.when it rains on the west coast it is usually torential and you may as well be sitting on the m1,it's absolutely 'no fun'.
from perth if you head over through crianlarich, tyndrum and then through glen coe up to fort william, if it's dry it's a fantastic road. the road from fort william to inverness is also good.
but if you want to see the best roads try ullapool to deerness and then onto thurso, stunning scenery, very little traffic and brilliant roads.
if it's forecast rain in the west, try the run up the coast to inverness and then wick , i also enjoyed the roads in the east.

good luck steve, hope it stays dry for you :icon_thumleft:

if you go glencoe then either on the way from fort take the kinlochleven turn just before ballachullish bridge and it brings you out just ready to head up glencoe or if you come down of glencoe then take the road round kinlochleven it will bring you  out the other side of the bridge heading to fort , once in fort head for spean bridge then take the road to avimore / newtonmore from there head towards nairn and inverness from there there are plenty routes to choose from ballmoral etc some truly awesome roads mountain passes etc was up that way myself a while back really enjoyed it look out for a place called cock pass ! also the road to sky or malliag are really good . enjoy and pack the waterproofs just in case oh and keep a good look out for plod especially on the glencoe route !

cheers
