Secondaries Out - My thoughts / Photos
« on: July 13, 2009, 07:54:11 AM »

I know there is tons of topics on this but just thought I'd post some photos up of this operation on 06 ZX10

Already had a TRE so they opened early anyway but had some spare time so thought I'd give a shot.

- Removed sidepanels / seat
- Removed Airbox (once unbolted it's 'twists' out
- Unbolted tank but just swung round 180 degrees to allow access to butterflys without removing petrol pipe etc

the flys came out fine, after reading alot of horror storys was abit scared as apparently thread locked in, but a very long screw driver and lots of pressure meant they all moved first time no problems.

total time for job about 1hr...  the bike is definately improved and the power comes in very strong and fast at lower revs, feels alot stronger, especially at low revs in high gears. bike also sounds louder / more intake growl low revs. they are gonna be staying out for sure  :icon_thumright:

which prob means you're burning hotter and now leaner. you might want it on the dyno now to make sure you're not running a lean engine

just got back from dyno run, bike running very rich but was lean on tickover, so they tweaked that out. last time I ran about 166 at wheel, only 159 today :(  :crybaby2: :icon_scratch:

It only works when youh ave the airbox and head work to match as it only aids airflow at peak revs.
Wait till you see the torque curve disapear.......................

its all a myth with these secondaries out, as they sit in-line with the throttle valve so wont cause any restriction as the air will be disrupted by the throttle (hard to explain in words but give it some thought)  , plus you have a great big fat bar in the bodies!
ask any top engine tuner they`ll you the same, even cresent leave them in on there 210bhp+ BSB bikes, all this hype about this mod came from the yanks and what do they know!

Remember dyno runs are done at full throttle so in theory the secondary butterflies  should be wide open through most of the rev range.  Liam don't forget that Crescent will most likey be using a fully programmable ecu so they can calibrate the  secondaries to be spot on.  It all depends on the bike, PB got great results removing them on the 08 model.

i tried it on my bike with and without on my mates dyno that i use, and it made fook all difference, even tried different maps not a massive difference either way, even at 10,25,50,100% throttle very little difference through the range, only talking point of a bhp and that could even just be down to the temp of the fuel

Maybe they did a good job of the software algorithms in the ecu  for opening the secondaries on the 06/07 ?
Perhaps on the later bikes they are strangling them around the 5 -7k rpm mark for emissions and noise reasons ?
