Mine had some sort of breakdown, when I mentioned about changing it for a better looking, more efficient model.  One that doesn't look so old and tired, and make horrible noises when you want to put a load in.

Those pre-war ones are very troublesome.  Firstly, you need to clear away all the cobwebs when you get the covers off.  Typically, loads of dust and dry, flakey, scaley stuff will needed to be removed to get right inside.  The older the model, the more risk there is of breaking something.  They are very fragile, and its not unusual to hear a loud crack when working on one.
