Tail tidy
« on: May 17, 2009, 10:35:18 AM »

Decided to fit a tail tidy to my 58 plate but whats the legal requirements regarding a plate light. The people I bought the tidy from say's the rear light, although its red, is fine but my local dealer say's it has to be a white light. Looked on the VOSA websight and I cant see a mention of a plate light being needed in there guidelines. Anybody know the legal side of things?

there has to be a number plate light, white in colour but does shine white light out just on the plate

there also has to be a reflector fitted to the rear of the bike red in colour

but i have never fitted the reflector and never had an issue up to now

Reflector isnt a legal requirement but is needed for the MOT. Dont know about plate light but i dont have one and have never had a problem, you dont need one for the MOT.

if it isnt a legal requirement then why do you need one for an mot? you have just contradicted yourself buddy

you do need a reflector

cant find anything about a number plate light so guess its not a testable item

Statutory reflectors

Mopeds and motor bicycles require one unobscured red reflector which is aligned to the vehicles longitudinal centre line and is positioned to reflect squarely to the rear. If the motorcycle is fitted with a side car the side car will also require a reflector fitted towards the nearside and positioned to reflect squarely to the rear.

Reason for Rejection (FAILURE)

There is not one unobscured RED reflector (in the case of a motorcycle combination one on the machine and one on the sidecar) positioned to reflect squarely to the rear.

you do not have to have a light on the back of your bike for an mot, it is not  in the testing guidelines for mot, issued by vosa. you do have to have a reflector for the mot

Oh yea sorry mate your right. I just kinda meant that you do need one for an MOT, but if you got stopped at the side of the road i highly doubt they'd do anything for you not having a reflector. So yea it is a legal requirement but only really for the MOT. Cool? :icon_thumleft:

Got R&G Tail Tidy on mine. Comes with a white light...... For MOT I fit my "LEGAL SIZE" no. plate, which I have stuck on a small reflector....No problems for a pass.....Get home, re-fit 7x5 plate again.....

I bought an Evotech tail tidy and it just uses the original tail light. Easy to fit too. No space for a reflector, but, I've got 3 years to go for that, so I'll worry about that then.

Cheers, Flipper
