Looking for Beemer car
« on: March 16, 2007, 11:26:09 AM »

Any of you drive a 3/5 series bmw? I'm looking to buy one, X-reg or newer and wondering if there is anything to look out for?

Going to look at a 535 on Sunday - looks good on paper but will probably be a bit thirsty.

yes mate a drive a 528  but also got a M5 lol.......make sure it has no cooling problems i.e  overheating  cos the straight six engine is a pig to change coolant on and it airlocks causing overheating if not done correct.....its also a ally block and should have steel head bolt inserts in it.....the early ones had bolts straight into the ally block and if the head gasket went most of the head bolts would not re-torque they would jus strip the threads in the block there was a recall and BMW sorted it but its worth knowing.....good luck.....lovely cars tho mate

I've driven a 03 M5 before - absolutely AWESOME car! Unfortunately so far out of my price range that I couldn't hit it with a driver and a hurricane strength tail wind.

It's a bit weird that loads of guys on here have beemers, I feel left out with my Passat and Focus  :crybaby2:  ..except when it comes to cheap servicing and MPG that is  [whistle]   [rofl] [rofl]

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but the 535 is a V8 in E39 model trim. Not a lot to look for - just make sure the electric things all work and that when you accelerate hard that it kicks down quickly (that's if it is a steptronic/auto)

I've got a 540 and they are awesome peices of kit  :icon_thumright:

If it has a service history, also ring the garage that did the work and see what they have to say.

I wouldn't buy a beemer without the full service history and I would buy one that didn't have full BMW service history, yeah ok so you will pay a bit more but if the car has full bmw sevice history then you get a discount from them after 5 years so cheaper servicing and parts.... think they called it loyalty discounts  :icon_thumright:

The one I'm going to look at is the E39 3,5L V8 manual - I prefer changing gears myself. It's a 2000/X, leather interior, alloys, 45k miles, and has had 3 services done by a BMW specialist in Chelsea/Kensington (can't remember the name now, but not a main dealer). The seller is a very posh investment banker that's being transferred to Hong Kong, so he wants to get rid of it sharpish.
