DIY - Garage roof
« on: March 28, 2009, 08:16:55 AM »

Well, it seems that I need to replace my garage roof in the next few weeks  :crybaby2:

I've looked broadly at prices which are a bit steep for my liking and lack of funds so it lookslikeanother DIY bodge for me to do with the help of my lads  :icon_thumleft:

The roof is chipboard and although it is leaking in several places I feel that I'd better replace the whole lot with 3/4" ply  as it's prob all knackered really  :-S   one of the beams is rotten too so a new one of those is required too

Any advice fellas from how to do it  from;

- Do you know anyone who can do it for a decent price ?

- Wood tobeordered in 8ft sheets from Jewson

- Is Wilkinson really the cheapest place for the glue and felt layers ?  :shock:

The only advice i can think of is this:
If youre having the roof right off, before you replace it, build one length up with  4 x 4 or something similar. That way with the joists resting on here you will give your roof a slight slope (im assuming its a flat roof).
Hay presto, no more leaks coz the water will find its way off the roof and not puddle. It only needs to be a 1% slope  :icon_thumleft:

yes it's flat and a good idea for sure, I'll build some slight wedges for that and of course it'll then need to have a smooth run off to the gutter else it might trap near the edge  :icon_thumright:  +bhp

May be worth considering doing the ripping out & replacing the woodwork bit yourself & then getting a roofer in to do the felting as a cash in hand job, should only take him a couple of hours.   :dontknow:

1cm per 1 mtr of run off is the minimum to try and achieve.
(Cant believe how chuffed I am to get a BHP!  :emb: )

Use corrugated galvanised sheet Andy - its cheaper than ply now and you don't need to felt it as well so its even less money. Make sure you have a slope as Kev said to the gutter. Drive the fixing nails through the higher ridge so there is no pooling and you can add in clear sections to allow light if you like and save on electric.
Have at least 3 ridges on the overlap so the wind can't push rain through.
Cut ply for the facia boards to form upstands and get a roll of edging felt, split it down the middle, and form off the upstand so it lies down onto the sheets and completes the weather proofing.
Here's mine
