I find it hard to think that in this day and age (and in the current ecomonic climate) that customer service is at an all time low in certain places, this disscussion has been thrashed out many times before on here and we all pretty much feel the same way. I'd put it down to two reasons in this instance, firstly he's not interested in your p/ex (in which case tell you the best thing to do is sell yours privately and pop a deposit on the new one , thats what 'd be inclined to do having worked in bike sales) secondly he doesn't give a toss either way and wants to slit his and his employers throat with a shit attitude towards potential customers. We'd all love to buy a brand new bike but haven't got the money to pay outright so need a helping hand on p/ex values finance deals etc, and with that sort of response it doesn't help anyone. Sod them and look elsewhere, sounds like they'll struggle this year with people like that at the helm.
