looking at hopefully getting a duke 748/916 in the near future
been offered a yammy xv535 dirt cheap as a work hack so i'm thinking of tracking the 10r
can anyone tell me wot the dukes are like to live with.i know all the usual spiel....servicing,belts.....blah blah blah
but wot r there road manners like,riding position etc
most mags jump on the "cramped riding position,high pegs,can't tour or ride for too long"band wagon
but hey! don't they say that about most sports bikes?
i'm 5'8" short so surely this shouldn't be any more a problem than other bikes :dontknow:
can u have a blast on these things all day? can u tour?.....in some degree of comfort
not many about for sale but some that are have very high mileage so obviously they're being ridden good distances
don't wanna test ride any yet,roads to shitty for a proper test ride :rol

My mate had a 916 as a road and trackbike,  his only criticism was there slow, but they carry massive corner speed. He had it from new in 1997 and only sold it 2 years ago with mega high miles on it. It never gave him any trouble, and i know he did the odd ride to assen.

Hi mate,

As Dave said, I currently have a 2000 W plate 748.  I got it looking a little rough around the edges (sat in a garage untouched for two years) and last summer I set to work restoring it. And I pretty much think its up to excellent condition now and looks great.

I got your PM, but i'll stick general stuff on here.  PM me for anything else you can think of.

With regards to the points you make....hmmmmm

A 748 will not set your arse alight, like the ten but thats why I like it.  Its dead different.  A 916/996 may be more grunty but again, ain't no IL4 thou or even 750.  But to be brutally honest, who gives a fuck.  Its looks brill and sounds flippin awesome.  With termi's on, I have to walk it down the street early mornings before starting it.  Over the winter I've fired it up to blow the cobwebs off and it makes the house humm. :headbang: :headbang:

Riding position I think it quite comfortable.  The bike is noticeable narrower than my ten or even my old K4 gixxer 600. But its a nice length reach over the long tank and you sit very comfortably.  I am only 5ft 9 and I think its adequate size.  A lot of 5'11 + would look like a flippin tit, but hey I ain't so don't care.

The longest I rode on it, was when my old mate (the one who left it in garage) bought it and I rode back from London.  About 110 miles.  In one sitting and in cold of winter.  I loved it.  Kept me alert (deafening termi's and vibrating bike) and wasn't aching like I sometimes am on the 10.  Any arse up head down bike will be uncomfortable, but the 748/916 style and position is slightly less agressive than most.  The odd stop for fuel (bike and human) and you'll be going to the horizon like a boy whose just beaten the school bully.  Thoroughly pleased with yourself.

Its light, nimble and turns in on a 6pence.  It catches me out sometimes at how flickable it is...look and go. Simple as that.  Another thing to bear in mind, is its no "modern" sportbike. Analogue clocks, old school look and feel.  But solid.  I replaced all the nuts and bolts with proper ones as often the vtwin rattles em lose and people use non duke parts to replace them.   Dzus fairing bolts are a must.  And maybe budget in for some new bolts, in a few other places if not standard.

I know I may not be close, but if your ever up my way..your more than welcome to take it out.  If you considering buying one, why not pop up and take it out for an hour or so.  I bet you come back grinning like paedo in a playground.

Servicing is a must (and main dealer or independant specialist only).  Big services at every 6k (budget for 500-600) and a cambelt every 2yrs (with service about 300).  So its no cheap hobbies.  But any Duke dealer will treat you like a long lost brother and tell you what you need, recommend some other stuff too perhaps.  I like the fact they mark each bolt with marker, to show they've all been checked and tightened properly.  Personal thing maybe.

Anything else.....erm.....probably it. Oh...mines for sale  :tongue3:

i'm sold!! gonna be a good few months till i can have one tho(missus :roll:)
just lately i've fell in love with ducati's and tho the 748/916 etc's are old they pull it off well
slow as they maybe thats more of a reason to explore the bikes talents & grunt on our increasingly congested roads
and the noise they make is worth the price tag alone :tongue3:

I don't think " slow " is the word - " different " would probably be a better description or " deceptive " as , one look at the speedo very often surprises an unitiated twin rider  [whistle]

Think Whit3r@bbit just about covered it, but would have to dissagree about them being light and quicksteering, heavy old lumps for sportsbikes, generally slow steering ( which i like) but lots of adjustment available if not. Maybe wise to steer clear of the Sp, @ SPS models as Ducati have announced they will no longer manufacture or stock spares for these bikes, ( many owners are buying up spares now!)  :icon_thumright:

 Had a 916 for 4 years. Road and track. Traded it in for a new ZX10 in 05.. The Duke is an awesome machine. Deceptively quick. They require a forceful hand to get them to turn in at speed but once in the turn they are solid.
Servicing is vital to keep them alive. (An all day job if done correctly as checking the valve clearances is a pain). As is  having a good battery.... rectifiers fail if not.My only break down was due to rectifier failure. Belts done 2 yearly and fit the Kevlar ones. They are reliable generally if used regularly...The ones that are left for months at a time and come out rarely are the ones that go wrong. The harder you ride them the better they seem to survive.   :shock:

To make it short, its a lovely bike, great on the track!!! Only problem I had was around town in summertime, the temp got up very quickly. Maybe thats just me not going fast enough... :dontknow:

Yes, they are all like that. Designed to be out on the road, not in towns. Another problem I forgot about is they tend to burst the header tank....Mine did, resulted in a misting up inside the fairing screen and a small puddle of coolant on the floor. Only happened if the temp. went up high and pressure in system caused a split to open up releasing pressure like a valve....easy job to replace them. ( I bodged mine for a while with araldite)..

I had a 748 Bip with Termis, filter, chip and a few tasteful bits of carbon almost 10 years ago now. No regrets about the bike, it looked stunning, sounded awesome and in two years /12,000 miles never gave any trouble. I just had a few main dealer services and had no issues. I found the dealer to be essential as there were a number of little tweaks not in the shedule they learnt from experience which may well have saved me issues those who cut the corners had. I also got the sidestand modded!

Handling wise I never really got mine set up right, I played about and never really got it satisfactory, really should of paid some money and got some help. It handled well but I always had the feeling it should have been much better. The biggest gripe and why it had to go was that it was not just a bit slow, it was slow as fook. I would love an original 916 as an ormanent but if I wanted a bike to have a play on it would have to be a 996/998.

Slow as fook????  In comparison with a 160bhp 10?  Well obviously.....but come on, be realistic.  In ain't that slow...I love my 748...think its got loads of grunt.  And on most roads and real riding speeds would be more than enough.  And personally, think it sounds better than any IL4.

I do think our love of bigger and bigger bikes with more power and bhp does distort our view of the smaller cc or bhp bikes.
