Amazing what you think while spending hours driving to and from work. Anyway here goes. Imagine you are coming upto a set of traffic lights which are on red. You can either brake very late and hard for a short time (with no one behind you), or brake early and gently, but for a longer period. Which method would wear out your brake pads first ?  (I dont know).

Braking late and hard would wear them first. It's doing more work in a shorter time

Nope, the motogp bikes have a very high idle speed

Nope. Braking from a given speed to zero the work done is the same whether you take 1 sec or five secs. Therefore the wear will be the same.

Nope you'll have to pull on the lever harder and therefre the braking force will be greater, it's all to do with G forces

just ease off the throttle use the gearbox and a little brake  thus saving the pads

Have to agree with Andy that the hard late braking force must surely wear the pads more quickly

defo late hard braking generates more force and stress on the pads thus creating quicker wear rate on them....

Quicker wear rate, yes, but for a shorter period of time. The amount of wear will be the same

nope, nope nope totally wrong. It wont be the same it will wear them out faster.

will defo wear them out faster as your asking the pads to stop the same weight and energy (force) in a much shorter space of time thus you need to apply more pressure to haul it up generating more heat......look at it this way.....would u like to skid down the tarmac on ya bare ass at 40mph for 100m nice n gentle so to speak or wud u prefer to skid doon the tarmac on ya bare ass with a fat burd sittin on ya knee at 40mph......either way its gunna hurt but am sure you wud hit the freakin bones quicker wi the extra weight on ya.........dunno if that maks sense but sounds reet technical

It will actually wear them out very fractionally slower but the difference will be negligible.
