Traction control????

A thought came to me last night after the dog woke me at 3 in the morning. Stupid time to be thinking i know.
Has anyone ever developed a traction control system around a steering position sensor?
If the back end spins up, back end steps out and the steering angle changes. If you had a position sensor on your steering, a bit of electronic wizardry could cut a cylinder or retard the timing enough to stop the slide when the steering angle passed a predetermined adjustable angle.
It could be adjusted to cut in at a small angle to maintain the best possible traction out of a corner or a larger angle to allow those of us without Kiyonari type talents to be able to spin it up coming out of corners with relative impunity.

Or i might just be talking out of my arse.

Sounds good in theory but say what if you were to come out of a corner all crossed up doing a slight wheelie? You might not be able to straighten it back up before the power cuts out so you land all crossed up witch may not cause you to crash but would lose you time on the track at least?

If the system were to just retard the ignition enough to reduce power rather than kill it completely it should help in that situation too by bringing the front back down gently and restoring full power once both wheels were on the ground and in line.

and what happens if you are rear wheel steering it around a corner in a race?? it retards poer, streightens u up streight off the track, also i think it may cause the  occasional high side

Wouldnt that argument be the same for any form of traction control? Im not a racer, just a mid pack fast group trackdayer so rear wheel steering is not really in my repertoire but surely a system that limits how far the back wheel will step out would be a good thing?

You just wrote "Heartbreak Hotel" a couple of years too late fella!   :tongue3: ( you,re a day late and a dollar short) as Ducati,s 2009 production 1198  traction control works on retarding the ignition.   :icon_thumright:

I think youll find that the ducati system works by monitoring the rate that the revs increase, back end breaks loose revs rise sharply, and not with a steering angle sensor. Retarding the ign is just the way of softening the power, nothing new there either.

You mean rught hand AND arse cheeks surely. You need your arse cheeks as the sensor that tells you the back has broken loose so your right hand can soften the power.

That could be interesting when doing a u turn :D
I think you could quite happily switch the fooker off for doin' your direct access. And would you really notice a degree or three of retardation when pottering around town.
