The winds of change...?
« on: December 10, 2008, 11:09:25 AM »

Currently, having far too much time alone (in the car) and thinking about everything including replacing the kitchen sink, my mind wondered onto the subject of my bikes.

As most of you know, I have a 748 duke and my beloved 07 ZX10r.  However, I rode either bike no more than 10 times this year and to be brutally honest it depresses me.  I've got two gorgeous machines that spend more time on paddocks stands than they do on tarmac.  It seems like such a waste.

So I be toying with the idea of changing the 10 to something a little more "practical"....something like a zzr1400 or a Busa...and yes...even considered a Blackbird.  Before you all start throwing abuse allow me to explain why.

Neither of my bikes (but from now on I'll concerntrate on the 10) are super comfy for long distances and practicality for me (who wears a suit for a living) means leathers and rucksack don't lend themselves to being a viable option to commute on.  I used to commute to warwick a lot as my office was there, and I could pack a shirt and trousers in my bag and get changed in my office.  however now, 99% of the time I spend going to meetings at NHS trusts and cannot look anything other than 100% professional and well turned out. Also, several hours in a arse up head down riding position isn't ideal and I find my back and hands are really sore after long periods in the saddle.

If I changed to a slightly less agressive bike, with a more upright position and the possibility of a topbox/panniers to take some kit I would be more inclined to use the bike more frequently.  And, if I still want to out for a sunday hack with lads has enough of a sporting pedigree to still be fun on the twisty's? I would get more use out of the bike, ride it for a longer period of the year (with warm kit) and see better value for my money.

To add to that, next year I am hopefully doing some Endurance races with Dave plus a few trackdays so my need for adrenaline fuelled 3 figure road blast will be low.

Has anyone else had this conundrum?

Yep...thought of that but thought why?

My bike is a sports bike, and don't believe in trying to change it into something its not when there are plenty of models out there designed for what I want?

Why?? so that when you decide to do a track day or something you simply remove the back box and sticko n a pair of clipons and you are ready to attack corners at warp speed again :)

True...but I've got a Ducati 748 + looking for a new track bike so not really gonna put the 10 on track...

Its too much money to risk wrecking....in my opinion?

fair enuff if you are gonna have a dedicated track bike (some of us dont havethat kind of spare capital :) ) then i don't see that much point in having a 10 on the road if you are a big guy, busas and gtr1400's are too big to be comfortable for me as i am a bit of a short ass

Ha ha....me "big guy"...depends what you mean?  :emb:  I'm 5ft 9 and 15 stone...so like a biscuit barrel at the moment.

Maybe once the weather improves, I need to test ride a few?

Busa's are probably less comfortable than a ZX10R, despite their "Hypertourer" reputation, also the fuel range is no better . If you are gonna get a lardier bike you might as well reap the benefits if you are putting up with the drawbacks. ZZR1400 !

Have a read of this month's PB , they have a GSXR1000 vs Busa vs ZZR1400 vs BBird feature !

GTR1400 or ZZR 1400 with bar risers Bunny. The ZZR is sportier but after a whille its still head down a bit. The GTR is awesome but can be a bit vague with the way the bars are mounted. The ZZR is as bonkers as a 10r if you really want to get on it. The bars are still clip-ons and with risers is a cracking bike.
Plus they're both kwacks.
