not bike related but hey, its in general waffle
« on: December 08, 2008, 10:41:31 AM »

So, does anyone have any experience with underfloor heating?? i am considering installing it in my house.  I have doen a little bit of research online and have found that the pipes are usually laid and then covered with screed (a sort of stoney plaster/concrete/rubber type thing) however that not really the way i was thinking of doing it.  My thought on it was to fix the pipe under the floorboards of my house(in the proper pattern of course) then [place insulation underneath the pipes along witht he foil coated aluminium insulation to reflect the heat back up(this would all be fitted between the joists).  However somebody told me that it is really inefficient to have the underfloor heating below wooden floor boards, but i have seen them offered for parkeet and laminate floors...

So does anyone hav a clue whether my idea would work out or would i just be wasting my money???

I wouldn't have it in an open space under floor boards..... they do special slabs for underfloor heating too.... this lets you mount the slabs under the floor , you just run the pipes in the spaces in these slabs and then lay boards or laminet etc over the top.....

this isn't a cheap way of doing it though...

from my memory and this was some time ago.... they use solid flooring to over come leakage problems.... as if this was to leak in and open space you wouldn't know for ages ... where if it leaks on solid floor ten it will show almost straight away.....

plastic pipes normally only give 25 years guarantee on them......

nah its loopy putting it under wooden floors, u value of wood is very high, and you wont feel fook all. try this burn on sied of the piec of wood and you can still hold the other end...try sticking a copper rod in a fire for a few seconds and see how long you can hold the other end...

wood does not convect heat so your heat will stay under the floor....

Laminate flooring can be made with low U value to transmit the heat...but not wood...

Other problem with wooden floor is the contraction/expansion of the wood. You'll split it to fook. Better of with this http://www.heatprofile.co.uk/NewFiles/home.html. Put it the last house and it is really quick and piss easy.

The yanks use warm air a lot of the time but everything is in framework with nice big voids and trunking.

yea but they talk enuff hot air to keep the rest of the house warm so just want to keep their gun rooms in the loft warm

wouldnt the same hold true for wood as it does for stone tho?? takes a bit to heat it up but keeps warm for a long time??

I have sorta become convinced that i cant do it that way anymore so am thinking of a new cunning plan :) (i have to my wife somehow weedled my thought of underfloor heating outta me now she thinks its a necessity)

Never EVER let wives in on this kind of idea!!
Is the floor going to be bare floorboards or carpeted?
If carpeted, could you fit vents into the floorboards at regular intervals to allow the heat to rise from the cavity below?
If bare boards, would leaving 1/4 inch or so gaps between the boards do the same job?
Im no heating engineer, just throwing up some ideas.
