I work in the motor trade and would recommend you steer clear of anything german. And avoid diesel at all costs, why would anyone buy a nice car with a bloody tractor motor in it. Costs the same to run as petrol too. You wouldnt buy a german bike, you wouldnt buy a diesel bike. Its a no brainer when it comes to choosing a car. Japanese, petrol!!!!

your kidding right? every german car i have ever owned, and i've had more than a few, have been ultra reliable, the lexus (which is also rwd btw) breaks down all the time, loadsa stuff going wrong with them.  Also diesel will be cheaper to run if you do a lot of miles

WTF i work on cars to over the winter, german cars are ace, vw`s are great value for money.

the one car i would never buy is a civic type R it may be reliable but what a shit car you have to rev it like fuck and it only has a tiny power band. There slower than people think.

theres only a few options
A , for a practical every day car, german vw golf or bmw

b, balls out power and fun, EVO but no lower than an 8 

forget everything else.

German stuff is over engineered crap. If theres a simple, reliable way of doing something, the germans will overlook it in favour of some overcomplicated convoluted method which will undoubtedly break. Central locking that uses pneumatics with a compressor in the boot? WTF!!!
MK 1 GTi were fine, simple and fast enough. Golf GTi now. Twice the power, twice the weight. Same performance but doesnt handle as well.

For me always German cars,  preferably Audi's 

Had a few Golfs and Audi A3's etc no problems always reliable and hold the value better than most manufacturers

Currently got Audi A4 S-Line with all the extras, superb car

the type r insurance quotes i've had have been stupid so going to leave that one alone, plus most will have been thrashed and seen alot of cat d ones and or new engines so not a longterm investment me thinks, bit too highly strung/fragile or attract idiots like me... 

will never have a focus (st or not) don't like them and too many about, group 14 is same as a gti 1.8t anyway.

seems a beemer's going to cost same as golf insurance wise so it a case of the right car at the right time and close enough too. not going to do a 400 mile round trip to see a car. (although being in the midlands is kinda handy as everywhere is the same distance away lol)

only prob is every nearly every beemer (and most golfs) are silver and i can't stand that colour. after a nice blue or black for a coupe...
golf will have to be dark metallic red or black....

That's the way of the world unfortunately. Safety and noise/comfort considerations have made all the cars gain weight. I doubt a modern Lotus is much lighter than a MK1 Golf

I have a degree in mechanical engineering, 25 years experience in the motor trade and run my own successful bodyshop. I look after all sorts of german, french, italian, you name it , cars for people including a porsche cayman for a very famous tv chef, a collection of classic and modern ferraris for another customer, and various maseratis, astons etc. I was also entrusted with the paintwork on 2 very rare Bugattis with a combined value of 3.5 million quid one of which went to the states and came 2nd in the Pebble Beach concours d'elegance and is now on display in the dutch national motor museum.

Just because you drive a car, doesnt make you an expert.
As far as depreciation is concerned, the guy was asking about cars in the 5K price range so it makes sense to buy something that hasnt held its value cos you can get an awful lot more for your money. Thats why i run an 03 mitsubishi shogun sport and not a land rover discovery. 4k for the shogun, 12k for the equivalent spec landrover.

Relaxed now, ranting done!
Bodyshop is Padstow Motor Body Repairs, on the outskirts of Padstow, North Cornwall. I guess that gives away the identity of the tv chef. Only a small bodyshop but we do the job right. Look us up if you ever come down this way. Bike shop right next door, Bike Tech Services. The only place I'd ever trust to work on my bike. We do a fair bit of paintwork on bikes too.
