As for car choice of that list its an interesting selection...you got a real mix.  You have to decide what you want from a car...if you sit in for 3-4 hours a day then you want something that (imo) isn't gonna rattle, is gonna drive well and makes you want to drive it.  I would always go german for this...they just last longer and are closer to now they drove when new than any equivalent age non german car.

My mate has a 2001 330Ci coupe with 160k on the clock and it drives fantastically...compare that to anything of a similar age it won't be the same.

However, if you want something that is just a "run around" for short trips etc and for a family car...then I think anything you listed is fine.  But my preference would the Civic or the GTI.  The Civic is a brilliant drivers car and you can have some real fun in it.  But anything over 5k revs, its deafening...so not for conversation whilst thrashing it.  Is great to drown out the missus

I have ran every sort of cars, from sales rep wagons to 4x4 to hot hatches to coupe to sports cars.  And to be honest...my current MkV GTI is the brilliant!

Get a golf and speak to ChrisBlack10r.....he'll sort you out with what to look for and probably help you with servicing details etc.

I have a degree in mechanical engineering, 25 years experience in the motor trade and run my own successful bodyshop. I look after all sorts of german, french, italian, you name it , cars for people including a porsche cayman for a very famous tv chef, a collection of classic and modern ferraris for another customer, and various maseratis, astons etc. I was also entrusted with the paintwork on 2 very rare Bugattis with a combined value of 3.5 million quid one of which went to the states and came 2nd in the Pebble Beach concours d'elegance and is now on display in the dutch national motor museum.

Just because you drive a car, doesnt make you an expert.
As far as depreciation is concerned, the guy was asking about cars in the 5K price range so it makes sense to buy something that hasnt held its value cos you can get an awful lot more for your money. Thats why i run an 03 mitsubishi shogun sport and not a land rover discovery. 4k for the shogun, 12k for the equivalent spec landrover.

Tv chef never actually comes in to the workshop, always sends a lackey in with the car which is fine by me cos he does my head in too. He had a Merc before the Porsche, 2003 something or other and that was a bucket of rust.
I guess a bodyshop mans views of what makes a good car is going to be different cos hes taking them apart and putting them back together all day long, not driving them, but theres nothing like stripping down a VW to make you wonder WTF were they thinking designing it like that.
There really are no "bad" cars anymore. Theyll all do 200k miles + if theyre looked after well and i think weve seen that theres a big fanbase for german cars and these people are more likely to look after their cars regardless of cost.
What car would i recommend?

so something is engineered differently to something that is cost effect and you are calling it over engineered.... no I just call it quality...... ok so I am a snob when it comes to my cars...... like to see most cars drive for longer(service intervals), smoother in more comfort , more reliable and faster than mine would.... sub 20K

not sure that you can find another car to replace the M3.... as bunny has I have driven many cars to get where I did..... its not everyones cuppa tea , and its stereo typed to an arsehole.... who gives a damn ...... Beemer all the way

M3 is different. Its engineered to do a job which it does well. Nothing overcomplicated in its design which adds weight for no purpose.
An example of what i mean by overengineering.
Tailgate locking mechanism in Audi estates. Any normal engineer would design a straightforward pushrod from lock to catch. Its simple and it works. Audi put in  combination of 5 pushrods, various pivot points. more expensive, more weak points in the system, less reliable. Overengineered!!!
VW golf door trim fixings. Normal engineering. 1 plastic clip attached to door pad. Pops into a hole in the door. Simple. VW. Plastic clip attached to pad. another clip in hole in the door and another to hold the 2 together. Pointless overengineering.

Smaller ports means better driveability. Big ports may get more bhp at the top end  but for general road driving that isn't always desireable. That was a common problem with the Ford 2.0L Pinto engine in the RS2000,  the clever tuners flowed and fitted the 1.6L head

same with the early R6 some tuners used putty in the ports to make em smaller, but in the case of the golf the early ones defiantly drive better, in the summer a lad down the road from me bought a 02 golf 1.8t  and on the way back we had a bit of a race and my car was just a fraction quicker, nothing much though.  But the funny thing is the 1.8t is a lot quicker than a st170.
